A Tasmanian man found guilty of two counts of assault and of splashing a corrosive acid on arresting police officers in 2021 has been sentenced to jail.

Daniel Victor Gandini , who insisted on being referred to as " Diplomat Dan " during the trial, has been sentenced to more than three years in jail for assaulting his wife and splashing a corrosive acid on police officers.

In sentencing, the judge said he had referred to the 44-year-old Gandini throughout the trial as Dan to "minimise tensions" and would continue to do so in sentencing.A jury hears a man, who allegedly assaulted his wife and threw acid at police officers, refuses to be addressed by his given name and has invoked the Magna Carta during his court appearance.

The Family Violence Response and Referral Line offers an information and referral service by which callers are able to access the full range of response, counselling, information and other support services Gandini described her as "hysterical" and claimed she had manufactured a bomb hoax to attract the large police response that followed.

Chief Justice Blow considered the crimes against the four police officers to be more serious, and that it was significant they were simply "doing their duty" in attempting to arrest Gandini. The judge said none of the police officers informed Gandini that they were attempting to arrest him for family violence allegations during the incident, which the defendant had also said throughout the trial. The defendant was taken into custody on the night of July 8, 2021, where he remained for 15 months on these charges, and so the judge backdated his sentence to January 22, 2023.
