For the man who put the already cult shoe into motion – artistic director of Dior Men’s, Kim Jones – the tie-up was originally entirely self-serving.
The made-in-Italy hi-tops in white and “Dior Gray” leather, featuring an Oblique monogrammed Swoosh and an Air Dior stamp on Jordan’s Wings logo, also have Michael Jordan’s seal of approval. Jones was buoyed by the basketball superstar’s “enthusiasm for a product launched 35 years down the line” . “It was nice to see,” Jones smiles of Jordan’s warmth upon their first meeting in Monaco and at a second encounter in Chicago. “I was surprised he remembered who I was,” Jones blushes.
A teenage Jones would scarcely have believed he’d be making sneakers for the world’s sporting and musical greats. The boundary-breaking creative bought his first pair of Air Jordans by pooling his pocket money with two friends. The trio wore them on rotation, but, he maintains, “there were never any arguments”. “We were just kids who were really into clothes but with not much money to spend.
