Collection Privée scents are the crème de la crème of Dior’s fragrance offerings: They’re less commercial (and more expensive). The latest, Cuir Saddle, reimagines what you think of a leather-inspired scent.
What do you imagine when you think of a leather perfume? Something a little smoky and masculine? Sexy but dirty? The new Christian Dior Collection Privée fragrance, Cuir Saddle, will completely change all of that.
This is a leather scent so clean and airy you’ll feel like you’re wearing a cloud. Collection Privée scents are the crème de la crème of Dior’s fragrance offerings: They’re less commercial than the brand’s crowd-pleasing J’Adore or Dior Homme scents. Perfumer Francis Kurkdjian, Dior’s creative director of perfume creation, says that he approaches them like couture gowns. This may sound a little pretentious, but it makes sense when you smell some of these perfumes — especially Cuir Saddle. It’s a leather perfume, but it’s more like a pair of lambskin gloves than a beat-up motorcycle jacket.Kurkdjian was inspired by the Dior Saddle bag, the iconic unisex carry-all designed by John Galliano in 2000. “I was thinking about the way that both men and women wear the bag close to their skin,” says Kurkdjian. “It has a very ergonomic shape, so it almost becomes one with the body.” His idea was to translate this idea of soft, supple leather into scent — creating something that would feel intimate, not boisterous or showy. When you first spray Cuir Saddle, you may not be able to define the notes you are smelling. It’s all radiance and light — if a Rothko painting were a perfume, this is what it would smell like. Kurkdjian created this effect by wrapping white floral notes in a haze of synthetic musk molecules. After a few moments, Cuir Saddle warms up on the skin and notes of amber and soft wood begin to emerge. The scent becomes velvety and suedelike, with just a hint of fruity plum.Leather perfumes tend to focus on smoky, animallike notes. Traditionally, they have combined notes like clove, birch, and tobacco, making them evocative of a restaurant banquette or a new pair of loafers. Kurkdjian included just a whisper of those notes in Cuir Saddle — enough to suggest the idea of leather but not make it obvious. “I wanted to create a trompe l’oeil leather perfume that seemed ‘classic’ in its charred, smoky, and woody accord, but which ended up surprising the senses with unexpected lightness,” he says. “In my mind, I was taking the shape of leather and filling it with something fluffy and white.” What do people think of Cuir Saddle? We asked three New Yorkers outside the Leather Spa on 55th Street. “This is supposed to smell like leather? I don’t get that,” says a woman dropping off a pair of Louboutin boots with a broken heel. “But it smells expensive.” “This makes me think of someone really good looking getting out of the shower,” says a 20-something man in a tailored wool coat. “I would love it if my towels smelled like this.” “It smells creamy,” says a 50-something woman wearing Chanel flats. “I do think it smells like leather, but in a really pretty, not-literal way.”28 Best Sneakers for Women in Every Single StyleYour Daily Horoscope by Madame Clairevoyant: January 26, 2026Hilary Duff and Pop Music’s Performative Horniness CrisisWhat We Know About Jaime King’s DivorceMary Katrantzou Made the Case for a Phone-Free Night OutWe did the rich-aunt math on what’s truly elevated, what earns the splurge, and what’s a hard pass.$5 Gloves, Half-Off Puffers, and More Great Deals I Found This WeekAs a beauty editor, my personal “how to win at life” heroine is Rossellini — as she’s aged, she’s gotten cooler and more interesting.
