This article humorously tackles the issue of unwanted or duplicate holiday gifts. It suggests returning them, especially if practical, and offers a tongue-in-cheek solution of re-gifting.
What should you do with holiday gifts you either don't want or already have? cleveland.com's Ask Lucas guy has advice on this topic, but not good advice. This year for Christmas, I got a bunch of gifts that I either already have or don't have a use for. For instance, my mother-in-law knows I love to go camping, so she bought me a bunch of camping equipment. The problem is that I already have a bunch of this stuff or don't have a use for it.
I would feel bad returning it, because she is inevitably going to ask if I ended up using it. But I won't use it. What should I do?If it is one of those giant camping machetes, feel free to ship it to me at 4800 Tiedeman Road, Brooklyn, OH 44144, and I will be happy to keep it in the newsroom. There, it will come in handy on slow news days when I need to pass the time by shaking up cans of Diet Coke and explosively slashing them in the office kitchen. The same goes for camping fuel. I love things that go boom and would be happy to take that off your hands. That said, if these gifts are something lame like freeze-dried bologna or boots too large for my tiny hobbit feet, I don't want them. If you have something already, I think you're safe to return the gift without drawing someone's ire. What else would they expect you to do? Just keep it sitting around in the garage? How many foldable sporks does one actually need? As for gifts that you simply didn't want, that's a bit trickier. The benefit of returning the gift is you get to stick it to the mega-corporations that enrich themselves by convincing us to buy things we don't need. The problem is that you might upset your in-laws. Depending on your perspective, this could be a win-win. If you don't have the guts – or the receipts – to return the gift, you can always wait until the next holiday season to re-gift the thing you didn't want. Then it's someone else's proble
