Digital Imaginaries envisions an elevated future for the African diaspora

The African diaspora has always been left out of perceived narratives of the future, with little to no real documentation of black people in future imaginaries. “Afrofuturism” – a term coined in 1994 by culture critic Mark Dery in his essay titled Black to The Future – is used to describe speculative fiction that addresses African-American themes through the media.

The authors went on to collaborate with two other institutions: the ZKM in Germany, which puts on exhibitions across the world, and the Wits Art Museum – a joint collaboration with the Fak’ugesi Festival in Johannesburg. Digital Imaginaries is a joint project of Kër Thiossane, the Afropixel Festival in Dakar, the Wits Art Museum and the Fak’ugesi Festival of African Digital Innovation in Johannesburg.
