United Auto Workers to let contract with General Motors expire as chances of a walk out increase
: General Motors debuts the new 2019 GMC Sierra pickup truck at the Russell Industrial Center in Detroit, Michigan, US, March 1, 2018.
Just what the union will do after that will be decided in meetings scheduled for Sunday morning in Detroit. "While we are fighting for better wages, affordable quality health care, and job security, GM refuses to put hard working Americans ahead of their record profits of $35 billion in North America over the last three years," union vice president Terry Dittes said in a statement. "We are united in our efforts to get an agreement our members and their families deserve."
Dittes, the union's chief bargainer with GM, wrote in the letter to local union leaders that both sides are far apart on nearly all important economic issues after months of bargaining.
