Buried in the middle of an Instagram carousel, star triathlete Kristian Blummenfelt casually shared his VO2 max score from a recent lab test, and it’s exceptional.With the caption, “From the first month of 2026,” the 2021 Ironman world champion shared a video of himself wearing a respiratory mask next to a computer screen, which displayed a VO2 max score of 101.
1 ml/kg/min. The mark appears to be the highest VO2 max ever recorded under controlled laboratory testing.Before Blummenfelt’s test result, the highest VO2 max ever recorded was 97.5 ml/kg/min from fellow Norwegian athlete Oskar Svendsen in 2012. Blummenfelt’s score would be the first time an athlete has entered triple digits with the metric.The list of top athletes with high VO2 max scores also includes some legendary long-distance runners, notably ultrarunner Kilian Jornet , Steve Prefontaine , and Jim Ryun , according to Top End Sports.VO2 max measures how much oxygen your body consumes while exercising, and it’s measured as milliliters of oxygen consumed per kilogram of body weight per minute of exercise. Given Blummenfelt’s long list of accomplishments in triathlon, a high score indicating an incredible level of fitness isn’t all that surprising.In 2021, Blummenfelt won Olympic gold in triathlon, battling humid conditions in Tokyo. In the same year, he claimed the Ironman World Championship title in St. George, Utah.Last summer, the 31-year-old placed third overall at the 2025 Ironman World Championships in Nice, and followed the performance with a runner-up finish at the 2025 Ironman 70.3 World Championships in Marbella.Now with an unprecedented marker of fitness, what else could be in store for Blummenfelt this year?
