Senate Bill 10 will no longer be voted on by the City Council, despite being a major part of the city's housing plan

There is a housing crisis and existing zoning laws protect wealthy residents at the expense of young folks, seniors and low-income households. Reserving 80 percent of land for single-family houses raises rents, increases commutes and wastes resources. These restrictions block senior housing, block low-income housing, block young professional housing and block student housing. Land use should be equitable and environmentally friendly and Senate Bill 10 was a step in the right direction.

It is certainly possible that the bill would have devastating impacts on historic neighborhoods and not do much to create more housing. There is no reason to pit San Diegans against each other here. This would have made a lot of people pretty angry. We need to plan and direct growth around available opportunities and infrastructure, not multi-story apartment buildings popping up randomly in people’s backyards.
