Mets couldn't clinch Wild Card Series despite having lead in eighth
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza adamant he made correct bullpen decisions in wild-card loss to Brewers on Wednesday. to the Brewers, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza opted to go to right-hander Phil Maton with a 3-2 lead in the eighth inning, presumably, to set up closer Edwin Díaz. What followed was a game-tying home run by Brewers lead-off hitter Jackson Chourio and then a two-run, game-winning home run by designated hitter Garrett Mitchell, who pinch-hit in the fifth spot.
“I liked the matchup there, Maton-Chourio,” Mendoza said. “He just left that cutter all over the plate. Wanted to make him chase and we didn’t do that.”Maton has pitched brilliantly since joining the Mets ahead of the trade deadline. In 31 regular-season appearances with the Mets, he allowed eight runs in 28 1/3 innings with 30 strikeouts.
Mendoza could have gone batter-to-batter with two relievers — Reed Garret, who had pitched a scoreless seventh inning on 12 pitches, or Ryne Stanek, who needed 11 pitches for a scoreless eighth. But with it being a one-run game and the bullpen being relatively well-rested, Mendoza opted for different looks. Maton was the go-to arm in the eighth inning.
The good news for the Mets is that the Brewers have turned to their bullpen early in both wild-card games, utilizing nine relievers in the last two games.
