In The Dark Knight, Batman, Jim Gordon, and the Gotham City Police Department joined forces to stop the Joker from unleashing chaos all over Gotham, while Harvey Dent attempted to destroy the criminal underworld. The Joker not only messed with Gotham’s authorities but also with Batman’s mind, and even threatened him to kill people if he didn’t reveal his true identity to the world.
The interrogation scene has been endlessly analyzed and pointed out as a key moment that subtly reveals the Joker knew Batman was Bruce Wayne. The Joker famously explained to Batman he didn’t want to kill him because he “completes him”, and more than once he said he and Batman were more alike than he thought. The Joker can relate a lot more to a broken man like Bruce than a man of justice like Harvey Dent, which only made his obsession with Batman and desire to mess with him even bigger.
Why Joker Didn't Care Who Batman Really Was The Joker might have known that Bruce Wayne was Batman, but that doesn’t mean he cared about it. The Joker was almost infatuated with the idea of Batman, not who was behind the mask, which ultimately doesn’t matter as what completed him was the Dark Knight. The biggest proof of the Joker not caring about who Batman was is in what he did to Coleman Reese.
A Wayne Enterprises accountant knowing who Batman was and threatening to expose him was also a massive clue as to whom the Caped Crusader was, and it’s highly unlikely that this would have slipped the Joker. Batman’s real identity was a bigger obstacle to the Joker than he probably expected, as making it public would have ruined the twisted fun he was having with the Dark Knight, and to him, what was important was creating chaos and messing with Batman, not knowing who he really was.
