'Women have proven themselves capable in every area, including those previously held as male preserves and other sectors that continue to be predominantly male.'

It may be satirical, but this example when Jimmy Kimmel explains mansplaining to Hillary Clinton is one of the best illustrations of how infuriating some men can be:Often times we don’t know how to respond to these not-so-subtle responses. Some of them leave your mouth-gaping, while some don’t really hit you until hours later when you remember the response and realize what just happened.

Mansplaining is usually a sign of deep-seated insecurity and low self-esteem. To bolster their image, the insecure man will try and show off his knowledge on who he considers a ‘soft target’ aka naive damsel in distress. The irony is, oftentimes, the woman is an expert in the field and the man a total ignoramus.Ladies, you know how this goes. You’re mid-conversation and he raises his baritone. Ok, it’s probably more of a squeak than a baritone, as insecurity tends to raise vocal tones.

Never hurts to throw some numbers and experience at your mansplainer. The goal is to help them realize that their comment was condescending. If you’re impatient like me, you might just interrupt the mansplaining tirade when you hear the beginning of a mansplaining episode by stating your experience. Whether that’s at your office, college class, or at the gym, having the support of your friends will make it easier to stand up to mansplainers. When you see a friend being interrupted speak up, repeat their ideas and give credit to them. And if things get worse, you will have support when reporting to HR. Your allies may even propose sensitivity training to help end mansplaining and other sexist behaviors.
