Shadow frontbenchers have suggested that Diane Abbott is unlikely to return as an MP before the next election following her suspension from the party over anti-Semitism
.The ObserverMs Abbott issued a statement on Sunday in which she retracted the remarks and apologised, insisting that the “errors arose in an initial draft being sent”.reported that the letter itself was sent totwice from her own email account three hours apart and a week before it was publishedDoubts over her claims that the comments were made in error are likely to add pressure on Sir Keir Starmer not to allow her back into the party.
Several Labour frontbenchers have now suggested it is unlikely that Labour would allow Ms Abbott back into the party before the next election, which is set to take place in 2024. Asked whether she could be allowed back in, the MP said: “I doubt it. If LOTO were looking for a reason to kick her out she gave them a humdinger.”
Shadow work and pensions secretary Jim McMahon refused to say on Tuesday morning whether he would be happy to sit next to Ms Abbot again on the Labour benches and suggested people should await the outcoming of the party’s disciplinary process.
