Smoke from fires in Canada have affected air quality on the East Coast of the United States.
WASHINGTON — Thursday afternoon’s game between the Diamondbacks and Nationals has been postponed due to poor air quality. The air quality index at the time of the decision was 299, which is described as “very unhealthy.”
Major League Baseball released the following statement after the decision: “This postponement was determined following conversations throughout the day with medical and weather experts and the two impacted Clubs regarding clearly hazardous air quality conditions in Washington, DC.” The postponement adds to a list of delayed games on recent days on the East Coast. On Wednesday, the Yankees and Phillies both had home dates postponed.
Air quality in Washington was subpar Tuesday and Wednesday but decreased further Thursday morning to the point where people have been advised to wear Covid face masks outside. Nationals manager Dave Martinez said it “wasn’t good” when he went out to walk his dogs before heading to the ballpark.
