GM Mike Hazen wants to be as certain as possible that prospect Corbin Carroll is ready to come up -- and stay up -- before making the call.
SAN FRANCISCO — The Diamondbacks reached down into their system this week to bring up an outfielder who had put together an impressive season in the minors — only it wasn’t the outfield prospect most fans have been clamoring to see.
While acknowledging that Carroll has done little but dominate at the plate throughout his minor league career — he owns a .316/.430/.590 line in parts of three seasons, including a .315/.431/.616 line between Double-A and Triple-A this year — Hazen noted that Carroll’s amount of practical experience is relatively low.
Hazen said there is no avoiding the fact that Carroll is going to get promoted with a relatively small number of professional at-bats under his belt, but Hazen still thinks there is value in facing more upper-level minor league pitchers before that happens. “We need to see what these other guys can do, too,” Hazen said. “I envision these guys being key pieces to a future team of ours, so they also need the experience going into next year when we start the season.
Carroll is widely regarded to be among the best prospects in baseball; The Athletic ranked him the No. 1 prospect in the majors earlier this month. He is a speedy, undersized outfielder who not only sprays line drives to all fields but is a player whom scouts say has the ability to hit for more power than his stature might suggest.
