If the Guardians do not receive a payment, DSG will have a 10-day grace period. If the payment isn’t made, Commissioner Rob Manfred has said Major League Baseball will step in to ensure Guardians games are televised.
“No matter what, we’re confident our games will be on TV in some manner,” said Curtis Danburg, Guardians vice president of communications. “We don’t expect any disruption to our fans being able to watch the games on TV.”
In a release announcing the filing, DSG said it would honor its contracts. It has been reported, however, that DSG will void its contracts with the Guardians, Reds, Diamondbacks and Padres because their rights fees are costing them more than they’re getting in revenues.DSG’s contract with the Guardians runs through 2027. The Guardians collect between $47 and $51 million annually in rights fees based on the deal. DSG pays the Guardians in installments rather than a lump sum during the season.
“Diamond Sports Group’s bankruptcy declaration today is an unfortunate development that we have been expecting. Despite Diamond’s economic situation, there is every expectation that they will continue televising all games they are committed to during the bankruptcy process. for more than 20 years and produced live games for MLB Network since 2009, we have the experience and capabilities to deliver games to fans uninterrupted.”Sinclair Broadcasting Group in 2019 purchased 21 regional sports networks from Disney for $10.6 billion. It seemed like a great deal at the time, but that was before COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020. Then cable providers started dropping RSNs and more and more customers started moving away from cable because it was too expensive.
