The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has requested that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent reassign IRS criminal investigators to assist with deportation efforts, marking another attempt to bolster ICE's operations. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem aims to utilize these investigators to target the financial dealings of human traffickers. This request follows previous outreach to the Department of Justice, U.S. Marshals Service, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives for assistance with deportation.

The Department of Homeland Security ( DHS ) has requested that Trump Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent reassign IRS criminal investigators to assist with deportation duties. In a memorandum issued last Friday, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem stated her intention to utilize these IRS investigators to track the financial activities of human traffickers who bring undocumented immigrants into the country to take American jobs.

This is not the first instance of DHS seeking assistance from other agencies for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in deportation efforts. Previously, the Department of Justice, the U.S. Marshals Service, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were also tasked with supporting ICE. The Internal Revenue Service’s criminal-investigation division, as noted, comprises 2,290 special agents trained in forensic accounting and financial investigations. This division has been expanding since the Biden administration implemented significant increases in IRS resources, aimed at targeting everyday Americans. The specific IRS agents Noem requested possess full police powers, carry firearms, have the authority to arrest and detain individuals, and operate as a separate division from regular IRS enforcement officers and revenue agents. In 2024, the IRS-CI uncovered $2.1 billion in tax fraud and an additional $7 billion in other financial crimes.Even before Trump's new secretary assumed her position at the helm of the Department of Homeland Security, the department had already reached out to other federal agencies for assistance with deportation efforts. “Thanks to the last Administration’s open border policies, we’ve seen violent criminals and gang members terrorize American communities,” a DHS spokesperson stated at the time. “Today’s action empowers law enforcement officials at the DOJ to help identify and apprehend aliens who have illegally come into our country.” This directive enabled the DOJ to assign federal law enforcement agencies to support ICE in its removal operations and Homeland Security Investigations special agents in fulfilling President Trump’s promise to initiate the largest deportation effort in history. The DOJ subsequently granted authority to the U.S. Marshals Service, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and Federal Bureau of Prisons to investigate and apprehend illegal aliens. “Mobilizing these law enforcement officials will help fulfill President Trump’s promise to the American people to carry out mass deportations,” the spokesperson continued. “For decades, efforts to find and apprehend illegal aliens have not been given proper resources. This is a major step in fixing that problem.
