2021 shattered records for guns found on passengers at DFW Airport
Nationwide, the rate of firearms found on commercial airline passengers has more than doubled between 2019 and 2021 and nearly 6,000 guns were found on passengers last year. That doesn’t include other banned weapons such as stun guns, knives, brass knuckles and fireworks.
Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport ranked third among U.S. airports, followed by Phoenix Sky Harbor, Nashville International and Denver International. The number of firearms found on passengers has surged since the COVID-19 pandemic began, even though overall traffic at airports still lags behind pre-pandemic figures. Airport and security officials say that most passengers tell them they simply “forgot” they had weapons in their bags or concealed in their clothing.About 1 in every 98,000 passengers were caught with a firearm at TSA checkpoints in the U.S. last year.
