but its own original creation—a grounded, honest-to-God horror movie, but with a comedic twist. “The comedy,” Perkins says, “comes from allowing these Black people to exist in a full, authentic way within what we know to be horror. It’s not funny to see a bunch of Black people brutalized.”becomes a movie that people revisit every Juneteenth, although he can see the dark humor in the holiday’s origins, celebrating the end of slavery in Texas— more than three full months after the Civil War formally ended and over two and a half years after slavery was abolished.
