A former NHL goalie thought Jack Hughes' move against Rangers goalie Igor Shesterkin was disrespectful.
The play, in particular, was a breakaway, the Devils' second of the first period at Madison Square Garden, that Hughes used to try a fancy move — “The Forsberg,” named after Hall of Famer Peter Forsberg, in which Hughes faked one way and pulled a hand off his stick to tuck the puck in the other side. Rangers goalie Igor Shesterkin stopped the puck, a momentary reprieve in a period that ended 2-0 and a game that concluded in a 5-1 Devils win.
The Rangers began their season 12-4-1 after reaching the Eastern Conference finals last season, but that largely came in spite of their play — Shesterkin and backup goalie Jonathan Quick covered up defensive holes. Now, they’ve fallen to 13-10-1. Valiquette responded: “No, he’s had success against Igor playing him straight up. And I thought he slowed down. He wanted to put a fancy move on. It was more Instagram hockey than intense hockey. There wasn’t much of a back check, so that allowed him to do it. But I’m looking at him going like this and doing what in a practice a goalie would get mad at a teammate for doing, saying that would never happen in the game.
