By all means, develop your movie at a glacial pace, Marvel. Miranda Priestly is officially taking your seat. Disney announced a major shuffle in its theatrical release slate this week, and in the process, The Devil Wears Prada 2 landed a “groundbreaking” release date: May 1, 2026.
That prime summer slot originally belonged to Avengers: Doomsday, but with Marvel Studios pushing both of its next Avengers blockbusters to December dates, 20th Century Studios was quick to step in with one of its biggest legacy sequels. It’s a bold — and surprisingly chic — play. For a franchise built on fashion, stepping into the biggest box office weekend of the year is no small feat. As of now, The Devil Wears Prada 2 is the only film slated to open May 1, giving Meryl Streep’s Miranda Priestly the runway all to herself. Marvel Studios’ decision to delay Avengers: Doomsday from May 1 to December 18, 2026, follows what insiders describe as a need for “more time” to complete its massive production. Directed by the Russo Brothers and featuring the MCU return of Robert Downey Jr. , Doomsday is one of the most ambitious Marvel films ever attempted. Its follow-up, Avengers: Secret Wars, has also moved — from May 7, 2027, to December 17, 2027. In the wake of those changes, Disney handed the former Doomsday slot to The Devil Wears Prada 2, the long-awaited sequel to the 2006 fashion dramedy that earned over $326 million at the box office and became a cult classic. What Can We Expect From 'The Devil Wears Prada 2'? The sequel, officially confirmed last summer, will bring back Streep as the icy and iconic editor-in-chief Miranda Priestly. Original director David Frankel and producer Wendy Finerman are returning, and screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna is back on script duties. The film reportedly picks up years later, with Miranda navigating the harsh realities of a declining print industry and facing off against her former assistant Emily , now a major player at a powerful advertising firm. Blunt has teased her involvement with a wink, telling People, “What sequel? Oh my god, I can’t tell you anything!” Meanwhile, Stanley Tucci, who played Runway’s iconic art director Nigel, offered a similarly cryptic answer when asked about filming timelines: “I cannot answer that question on the grounds that it will incriminate so many people.” The big question mark remains Anne Hathaway, who has yet to confirm her return as Andy Sachs — though fans are hoping she’ll make an appearance, especially given the central role she played in the original.
