Wildfires swept across Oklahoma and Texas , leaving a trail of destruction and forcing evacuations. The blazes, fueled by strong winds, dry conditions, and high temperatures, damaged or destroyed hundreds of homes and structures. Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt reported nearly 300 structures lost, with at least two fatalities attributed to the fires. In Stillwater, a city of about 50,000 residents, at least 50 homes were destroyed or damaged, leaving residents grappling with the aftermath.
Fire Chief Terry Essary described the conditions as overwhelming, stating that the 70 mph winds made firefighting efforts nearly impossible. The Texas A&M Forest Service noted that the combination of high winds, dry conditions, and above-normal temperatures created a perfect storm for wildfires. While calmer conditions on Sunday provided some respite, officials warned of an increased risk of fire danger in the coming week. One of the largest fires in Texas burned approximately 14 square miles near Fredericksburg, but was 40% contained by Sunday. The strong winds also caused havoc on roadways, with several tractor-trailers overturned. Authorities reported three fatalities in car crashes triggered by a dust storm in the Texas Panhandle.Governor Stitt, who personally experienced the devastation when his own ranch home burned to the ground, pledged to rebuild alongside the rest of Oklahoma. The widespread impact of these wildfires has left communities reeling and underscores the growing threat of wildfires in a changing climate
