Mississippi Highway Patrol releases new information about monkey transport.
HEIDELBERG, Miss. - New details have been released by the Mississippi Highway Patrol about the wrecked monkey transport from Tuesday.MHP confirmed with WDAM that the driver of the 2025 Chevrolet Silverado hauling the monkeys at the time of the crash was a 54-year-old man from Cascade, Maryland.
According to MHP, the man ran off the highway into the median. Officials said the animals weigh about 40 pounds each, are aggressive toward humans and require personal protective equipment to handle the monkeys. The monkeys also pose potential health threats.A 34-year-old resident of Thurmond, Maryland, was also in the vehicle at the time of the crash. Neither was injured.Thirteen monkeys remained and were returned to their owner to be taken to their destination. Originally, WDAM was told that transport was headed to Florida. We later learned that it was possibly headed to Maryland, which would explain the I-59 route.
