Police have revealed what happened leading up to the moments a 19-year-old driver was killed after colliding with a ute when trying to flee from an officer.

"The vehicle did pull over, it came to a stop but as the officer began to get out of the vehicle, the offending vehicle ... drove away at speed," NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Tony Cooke said on Friday night.The driver, a 19-year-old Oyster Bay man, then attempted to merge onto an intersection at Old Illawarra Road and Alfords Point Road when he hit a guard rail and then a ute.
