The FBI was tipped off about concerns the suspected Georgia high school shooter from Wednesday more than a year ago but did not have evidence to make an arrest.

Mourners pray during a candlelight vigil for the slain students and teachers at Apalachee High School , Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2024, in Winder, Ga. from Wednesday more than a year ago but did not have evidence to make an arrest, creating questions about whether the tragic incident could have been avoided.and injuring nine others, before surrendering to two school resource officers who encountered him minutes after reports of shots being fired were sent out.

While authorities came into contact with the boy, there are many limitations to what they can do in terms of investigative steps and moving forward with any type of case without some type of probable cause, which tips don’t necessarily create. The Apalachee High School shooting was the latest in a growing list of horrifying shootings that have taken place at schools across the country that have set off heated debates about gun control laws and how to address safety at the nation’s schools.

“No kid is going to open up in front of mom and dad, and of course, mom and dad are going to say they have no reason to believe this kid's a danger,” Staropoli said. “There's no real easy answer to that, other than you have to work this as if you're working a fugitive case or a national security case. And unfortunately, the way the laws are written, I don't know if you can do that right now.
