Rep. Henry Cuellar, the south Texas Democrat, who was indicted earlier this year for accepting $600,000 in bribes, appears to be cruising to reelection.

Six months after U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar was indicted for allegedly accepting $600,000 in overseas bribes, the south Texas Democrat appears to be cruising to reelection as Republicans make little effort to challenge him. The National Republican Congressional Committee , which promised earlier this year to try and flip the seat in wake of the criminal charges, has yet to jump into the race.

Republicans flipped key seats in South Texas. Can they expand their reach in November? Locals say it's tough to compete against a politician who is so entrenched. Cuellar, who is seeking an eleventh term representing Texas's 28th District in Congress and has denied the bribery charges, is campaigning likebusiness as usual.

Rep. Henry Cuellar, accused of taking over $600K in bribes, will go to trial March 2025. Cuellar's campaign has spent just $2.1 million this electioncycle as of Sept. 30, compared to the $6.2 million his campaign spent in 2022. Furman, who is campaigning on a pro-Trump, border security platform, has spent only $264,000. At 69, Cuellar is something of a cottage industry in and around Laredo.

Two Cuellar aides admit guilt in bribery scheme, promise to aid prosecution Cuellar has maintained his innocence. He declined to be interviewed for this story but said in a statement, 'as the oldest of eight children born to migrant farm workers in Laredo, Texas, I understand the issues facing the people of this district.

Progressive Jessica Cisneros forces runoff election with U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar: ‘We are surging right now’ 'Jessica's campaign is a testament to that fact there's a large portion of the district that’s uncomfortable and is not being represented properly,' said Alejandro Garcia, Cisenros' former communications director, who grew up in Laredo.
