Designated pinch runner among experimental rules MLB will try out in Atlantic League
The 2023 Atlantic League season that begins April 28 will include the following tweaks:
• A rule that will allow teams to list a player not in the starting lineup as a designated pinch runner. That player can be substituted into the game at any point as a runner. And the player whom the designated pinch runner is substituted for, as well as the runner, can return to the game without penalty.
• Unlike in MLB, which allows a pitcher to disengage from the rubber twice during a plate appearance, the Atlantic League will allow only one disengagement during each plate appearance. The Atlantic League will also continue using the"Double-Hook DH" rule, which allows teams to use the designated hitter throughout the game as long as the starting pitcher gets through five innings. If the starter doesn't make it through the fifth, his team loses the DH for the rest of the game.
