The descendants of the late Rev. James Gordon McPherson have a newfound appreciation and deeper respect for him.
“He used to own a couple of newspapers out west, so it appears that the Utah folks got to know him prior to his marriage to my grandmother,” said Rosalyn McPherson, his granddaughter.Buffalo Soldiers were an all-African AmericanRosalyn McPherson, who lives in Philadelphia, came across an online link about her grandfather’s life in the Beehive state.
For Rosalyn, the eerie moment was watching the clip about her grandfather and seeing a picture of him as a young man.“You could see features of some of my cousins. You know like the lips, and things like that. It was really pretty eerie. I have a picture of him and my grandmother in the family room in my house,” said Rosalyn McPherson.
Robinson-Hill, a historian with the Fort Douglas Military Museum, explained that McPherson’s adjustment to civilian life was turbulent.“He didn’t come home from work for several days — weeks. He didn’t provide money and food. When she filed for divorce, she declared abandonment. And she was granted that,” said Robinson-Hill.
