Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) has directed flags to be flown at half-staff in honor of legendary musician Jimmy Buffett who died last week.
The Florida governor gave the directive, saying flags will be lowered to half-staff at the Monroe County Courthouse, City of Key West City Hall, and at the State Capitol in Tallahassee, beginning at 5 p.m. on Thursday and going through Friday at 5 p.m.Buffett was a Florida resident and held an appreciation for the state’s Everglades, often participating in philanthropic causes. He died on Sept. 1 at the age of 76 after a battle with Merkel cell skin cancer.
In 1977, Buffett released “Margaritaville,” which quickly took on a cultlike following. He became famous for his music about easy and laid-back beach living. He turned his folksy beach music into a billion-dollar empire of restaurants, resorts, and frozen drinks. “Buffett captured the Florida lifestyle and entertained generations of Floridians with his relaxed ‘Floridays’ style that embodied the spirit of the Gulf Coast and Conch Republic,” DeSantis said in a statement.Buffett was inducted into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame in 2000. In 2006, he was also inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, one of music’s highest honors.
