that the 2024 primary could look like the party's 2016 contest, in which Trump won with a plurality, and not majority of votes cast, because the non-Trump vote was too deeply split among several candidates, including Sens. Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio and former Ohio Gov. John Kasich. The California result suggests that this time around, most of the non-Trump vote is set on coalescing around one candidate, in this case DeSantis.
DeSantis' popularity among California Republicans is hardly surprising given that his signature issue is hostility toward COVID-19 restrictions — the very issue that drove the 2021 recall attempt of Gov. Gavin Newsom. Newsom and DeSantis have been publicly attacking each other for years, and DeSantis has clearly endeared himself to California Republicans by being a foil to Newsom.
The Berkeley poll also tested two general election matchups: one in which President Joe Biden faces off against Trump, and another in which he faces DeSantis. The survey found that Biden beats Trump by 30 percentage points, but only beats DeSantis by 23 percentage points.
