Me and my Omaha high school pals vowed to stay together. Through the years and distance, we did.

As the 1960s slid into the ’70s, we bonded in North Omaha at an architectural pileup named Technical High School . Moving from sixth to seventh grade brought us to the mammoth building, where junior high and high school students crowded imposing halls. We studied math, English and science along with electrical, foundry and wood shop classes.

Sick of cold-blooded politics? Meet the candidates at this San Antonio school. Lonzale Ramsey was studious. Willie Richardson was quiet and didn’t take any mess. Fred Montgomery was the standout athlete and lady’s man. I was the skinny kid newly arrived from San Antonio. We found safety in numbers from bullies who shook us down for money, watches or apparel they said would look better on them. Sometimes a hero thwarted these muggings.

We were young airmen at Ramstein Air Base — very young. But there was an adult in the room. “We were trying to do something positive, versus what negative things people were saying,” Willie said. “It was a time to make the community better, from young to old.” Our days and nights didn’t all revolve around civic responsibilities.

That’s Old School: Some playlists still sound good, static or not. Turn it up. At the end of my first enlistment, I was stationed at Lackland Air Force Base. Military life and a serious relationship with my future wife spurred me to make a career in the Air Force. I went back to Omaha on leave and talked to the crew about why I decided to pivot from our plan. They understood and as always, had my back.
