Johnny Depp is returning to directing, still riding the high of his successful defamation suit against ex-wife Amber Heard.
A quarter-century after his directorial debut, the actor is making his behind-the-camera return. Fellow actor Al Pacino is co-producing the project, titled Modigliani, which is about Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani."The saga of Mr. Modigliani’s life is one that I’m incredibly honored, and truly humbled, to bring to the screen,” Depp said of the Jewish Italian artist, per the Hollywood Reporter.
The screenplay for the film, written by Jerzy and Mary Kromolowski, was adapted from a play written by Dennis McIntyre. It will tell the story of the artist's life in Paris in 1916. According to the report, the store will follow the painter and sculptor, who considers himself a failure, over 48 hours that will become a turning point in his legendary career, cementing him into notoriety.
Co-producer Barry Navidi explained why the film is important to his partner, Pacino. “This project has been very close to Al’s heart. Al introduced me to the play Modigliani many years ago and I instantly fell in love with it,” he said. “This is a slice of Modi’s life and not a bio. It’s been a dream of mine to work with Johnny again — he’s a true artist with an amazing vision to bring this great story to the screen.
