"This is not just about housing individuals indefinitely; it’s about processing and returning illegal aliens to their home countries," Governor Ron DeSantis said. On Thursday, Gov. Ron DeSantis revealed that state officials plan to convert Baker Correctional Institution, in Sanderson, into an immigration processing facility. It was stated in the news conference that the new facility will accommodate over 1,300 detainees, with potential expansion to 2,000. The facility features existing infrastructure that will enable a swift and cost-effective setup, just 15 minutes from Lake City Airport and 43 miles west of Jacksonville. Additionally, officials said that the facility will provide comprehensive services, including 24/7 medical care, legal support, and access to recreational activities, adhering to federal detention standards. During the conference, Governor DeSantis highlighted Florida's leading role in immigration enforcement, noting the state's requirement for all local law enforcement agencies to collaborate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement . "If we don't stand up and fight to uphold our laws and hold people accountable, what does that say about our leadership?" Lieutenant Governor Jay Collins remarked. This policy, the governor said, has positioned Florida as a national leader in immigration control, surpassing efforts by other states. "We have done more on this than any other state by a country mile," DeSantis said.Echoing Alligator Alcatraz, the governor said the new facility will be known as "Deportation Depot." DeSantis noted that the state had previously looked at Camp Blanding as a potential location before settling on Baker Correctional Institution.DeSantis was joined by Lieutenant Governor Jay Collins, Florida Division of Emergency Management Director Kevin Guthrie, and Adjutant General of Florida Major General John D. Haas.
