He was given a six-month contract initially, followed by two three-month extensions – placing the current end of his contract around 30 October., a job advertisement was posted looking for a Commissioner to take on the role for the next five years, with a salary between $310,540 and $339,333. He has overseen significant changes in youth detention, including increased out-of-cell hours and more programs – although the Commissioner for Children and Young People recently reported those programs were often not tailored to the needs of individual young people.Secretary of the Prison Officers' Union, Andy Smith, said he hoped Commissioner Royce would apply for the position and continue in the role for another five years.
