South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem announced that the Department of Homeland Security is working with other countries to return Venezuela n migrants. In a recent interview, Noem addressed the possibility of the Trump administration utilizing Guantanamo Bay detention camps, stating that the administration is currently 'evaluating' this option. She emphasized that it remains the president's decision but highlighted the asset that Guantanamo Bay represents in safeguarding America.

Noem also expressed opposition to a policy initiated by former Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, which would have extended temporary protection for Venezuelan migrants in the US for another 18 months. This policy, Noem declared, would have 'tied our hands' as Venezuelan gangs, such as Tren de Aragua, pose a significant threat. She recounted her experience in New York City, where she witnessed widespread public support for removing these 'dirtbags' from communities and ensuring public safety. The ongoing issue of Venezuelan migration was further underscored by the recent passage of a bill named after a woman tragically killed by an illegal immigrant from Venezuela in 2024.
