Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington reveals he's recovering from a serious tongue injury sustained a few months ago. The injury is impacting his speech and presenting challenges as he prepares for his starring role in the Broadway revival of 'Othello'.
Denzel Washington is facing speech challenges following a serious injury to his tongue several months ago. The 70-year-old actor disclosed his health struggle during a recent appearance on The New York Times' 'The Interview' podcast. He explained that the injury, which he described as biting his tongue nearly in half, has affected his articulation and forced him to speak more slowly.
Washington admitted that his speech impediment poses difficulties as he prepares for his starring role in the upcoming Broadway revival of Shakespeare's 'Othello'. He particularly highlighted the challenge of delivering a complex line: 'Whither will you that I go to answer this your charge?' due to the swelling in his tongue. Despite the complications, Washington remained optimistic, attributing his resilience to his faith. He shared that he has been praying for guidance and strength, believing that this experience is part of a larger divine plan. The actor also revealed that he has recently been baptized and is taking courses to obtain his minister's license. Washington emphasized that his acting is now guided by a higher purpose, seeking validation from God rather than public opinion. He expressed his belief that the themes of jealousy, envy, pain, and death explored in 'Othello' resonate even more powerfully in today's information age. Washington also praised Jake Gyllenhaal's talent and predicted he would be brilliant as the cunning Iago, Othello's antagonist. 'Othello' is set to premiere on March 25 at New York City's Ethel Barrymore Theatre
