Denzel Ward was placed in the concussion protocol during the loss to the Chiefs.
The fact that he missed multiple games with his previous concussions means the same thing might happen in this instance, and he could be sidelined for the Bengals game Sept. 10 at Cleveland Browns Stadium. Players who have had concussions are more susceptible to them in the future.
The Browns can ill afford to lose Ward against Joe Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase, Tee Higgins and Tyler Boyd, but he’s at the mercy of the independent neurologist who will have to clear him. Ward will need to get back to his baseline on the concussion test, and that often takes longer for players who have had multiple head injuries. Last season, recurring symptoms kept him in the protocol for an extended period.
“Yeah, it’s tough,” he said upon his return in November. “Throughout that whole time, I was having headaches every day, and then in the protocol, if you’re having any symptoms, you’re not able to really progress. So I was kind of concerned a little bit, just like, when are these headaches going to go away? When am I going to start feeling better? But I was able to overcome that and glad to be here now.
If Ward can’t face the Bengals — the Browns also have three AFC North games in the first four weeks — the Browns will likely play Martin Emerson II and Greg Newsome Jr. on the outside and possibly move someone else inside to replace Newsome. They could also keep Newsome in the slot to keep that demanding spot is strong, while naming another outside starter such as A.J. Green, Mike Ford Jr. or rookie Cam Mitchell.
