UPDATE: Denver police are investigating a road rage double-fatal shooting on Interstate 25 near West 8th Avenue, and a suspect is in custody.
The driver of the victim vehicle stopped in the right lane of traffic on northbound I-25 directly underneath West 6th Avenue and his passenger got out of the vehicle and approached the driver of the suspect vehicle, who had also stopped.
“While the extent of the confrontation between the two is still under investigation, it appears the suspect pulled out a firearm and fatally shot the victim,” police said. “Then, the driver of the victim vehicle exited the car and approached the suspect who was still in his vehicle. The suspect began driving away and the second victim grabbed onto the vehicle.
An on-duty detective was driving nearby on the highway and heard the shots. He followed the suspect while communicating with uniformed patrol officers who made a traffic stop near West 13th Avenue and Meade Street where the suspect was taken into custody without further incident, police said. The suspect, Stephen Long, 25, is being held for investigation of two counts of first-degree murder.
Anyone with information or dashcam video of the incident is urged to call police or Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867 . The victims’ identities will be released by the Denver Office of the Medical Examiner. The Denver District Attorney’s office will make the final determination regarding charges, if any, in the case.
