Heavy crowds are expected at Denver International Airport on Thursday, marking the start of a busy Fourth of July weekend — and the kick-off for the busiest months of summer travel.

DIA says crowds are expected to match or exceed passenger volumes during the last Fourth of July weekend before the pandemic, in 2019, when the holiday fell on a Thursday.that summer travel will beat 2019’s record levels — notwithstanding a higher risk this year of cancellations by major airlines as they grapple with short staffing.

Cancellations have been much rarer at DIA this week than at some other major national and international hub airports, though 23% of departing flights were delayed Wednesday, according to the tracking siteDIA has urged passengers to arrive at least two hours before their flights’ boarding times and check their flight status.
