Just days after Mayor Mike Johnston urged Denver voters to pass an affordable housing sales tax measure this November, City Council members on Wednesday delayed its progress for at least two weeks.

Denver Mayor Mike Johnston, joined by members of the City Council and community leaders, announces a new effort to expand affordable housing in Denver on the steps of the City and County Building on July 8, 2024. Johnston hopes voters will pass a 0.5% sales tax increase this fall to fund affordable housing measures. this November, City Council members on Wednesday questioned if the measure was ready for the ballot — and delayed its progress for at least two weeks.

“It isn’t just ‘Let’s send it to the voters and let them decide.’ They are already being asked to support this, and we haven’t even approved it yet.” That delay leaves precious little time for the measure to be voted on by the full council if it is to be referred to the ballot in time to comply with election deadlines.
