The girl known as “La Malinche” is the star of the newest exhibition at the Denver Art Museum.
“Sold as a slave. Interpreter companion. Survivor,” is how Lyall said Artist Annie Lopez Portrays La Malinche. “There’s a great deal of misogyny and racism that has impacted how her story has been passed down through the generations,” said Lyall. “This is the first time that we’re really trying to consider the historical origins of so many of these different perceptions and identities that became synonymous with her.”
