Sheriff, jail staff and county medical officials were sued 10 months after Heath Vandeventer, 27, died of dehydration in Denton County jail.A lawsuit has been filed against Denton County Sheriff Tracy Murphree, the county itself and other officials after an inmate at the county jail died of dehydration.

Jailers should have known, the lawsuit said, about Vandeventer’s mental health history through the medical screening done during intake. The lawsuit alleges Vandeventer was housed in a small single cell during his incarceration. The suit said meal trays delivered to Vandeventer’s cell were later picked up without any food or water touched.

According to the suit, Vandeventer’s corpse was removed from the jail Sept. 13 after he had been unresponsive for days.“As a result of the policies in place on the date of Heath Vandeventer’s arrest and thereafter, Mr. Vandeventer was allowed to slowly and painfully die over the two month period he was in the Denton County jail,” the documents said.
