In this survey study, 39% of the patients with head and neck cancer experienced significant financial hardship owing to cancer treatment-related dental complications.
A recent survey found that most patients with head and neck cancer required extensive dental treatment, leading to financial hardship and high out-of-pocket costs in 39% of the participants. Patients with head and neck cancer often experience severe oral complications from cancer treatment, necessitating substantial dental care that is typically not covered by medical insurance. These dental complications may place considerable financial strain on patients.
Overall, 85 participants, who were members of the Head and Neck Cancer Alliance, completed a 20-item survey between March 23 and October 27, 2023, and were included in the analysis. Overall, 33 of 85 patients reported financial hardship due to post-cancer treatment dental care and an equal number reported out-of-pocket dental care costs of at least $5000.
