Denison University students and alumni are calling on the school to approve a Black female professor's appeal after she was denied tenure in December.
, which has received nearly 900 signatures to date. Students laud Powell Sears as an advocate for students, a critical thinker that challenges students' world views, and as a professor who isn't afraid to tackle difficult subjects like racism, classism and misogyny.
Faculty can appeal a tenure decision based on three categories: non-discrimination, academic freedom or inadequate consideration. Dempsey said she isn't certain which reason Powell Sears chose in her appeal but students are expecting a decision be made before April's board of trustees meeting, when tenured professors are announced.
