Denise Richards is sharing all the details about her first cosmetic surgery that she's had on her face. The actor got candid about her procedure, telling Allure in a March 20 interview that last summer at the age of 54, she got a facelift.
“I wanted to put things back up, where they were before,” Richards, now 55, said. “I was terrified. Being in the public eye since my 20s, people know what I look like — a facelift is not something that I could hide.” Eight months later, reflecting on her procedure, she said her face “is night and day. It’s shocking, actually.” While the “Wild Things” star, who gained fame in the ‘90s, shared that she’s not someone who says “never say never,” she was adamant about never getting a facelift. So what changed? Over the years, she said, she had “little Botox” and “very little filler” done, as well as had breast implants and reparative breast surgery. At first, she just wanted her neck done but upon meeting plastic surgeon Ben Talei, MD, she changed her mind. “He wanted to do the whole face and not just my neck. I was so scared to do that, but I thought, Well, if you’re going to refurbish a painting, you don’t do half a painting. Or when you remodel your house, it’s like the one room looks great, but the rest of the house looks shabby,” she said. “So I looked at it from that perspective, and I thought, Yeah, it might look weird that my neck looks good, but then it doesn’t match the rest.” Her mind was officially made up to undergo a facelift when she saw the before photos he took. The actor noted that many people in the entertainment industry confided in the work they had done and encouraged the decision. Her oldest daughters, however, she said, “Were not happy that I was doing it.” Richards has three daughters Sami, 22, Lola, 20 and Eloise, 14. “But I think now they understand, and they see that I still look like me. I think they were just worried, in general, of having surgery,” she said. Talei shared a handful of her before-and-after photos on his Instagram, including a photo of the surgical markings he drew. He also shared in the interview that he lifted the outer corners of Richards' lips “to make the mouth look happier and sexier.” He also performed “a very minor and conservative upper blepharoplasty” and a temporal brow lift “to correct the brow position,” he said. Talei also repositioned “the forehead and temples back to where they used to be” and did fat grafting. When it came to her recovery, Richards shared photos with the magazine of her face healing post-surgery. She shared that she went to a dedicated recovery center where she stayed for a week, doing red light therapy to heal. “The recovery is very important, and I was very surprised by how fast I healed — not that much bruising, not that much swelling,” she said, also describing some numbness on her ears and the brow lift being the “most painful part.” Overall, Richards is pleased with her results and was also surprised, she said, that her skin texture appears to be “more youthful.” Talei noted that he took fat from her thighs to create a “mix of her own microfat and platelet-rich plasma.” He then put a thin layer underneath the skin of her face and neck to make her look brighter and improve the appearance of her pores and wrinkles. “I think the most important thing for whoever is thinking about getting a facelift is expectations,” she said, adding that she told Talei, “‘I don’t have unrealistic goals. I’m not asking to look 20 years old, but I want to look the best I can look for me, and still look like me.’”
