The State Democratic Executive Committee will meet Aug. 13 in Birmingham and elect new officers. alpolitics

U.S. Sen. Doug Jones and the Democratic National Committee supported England for chair. England is the first Black chair in the party’s history.

Joe Reed, the head of the Alabama Democratic Conference, the party’s most influential Black political organization, said today the ADC will develop a slate of candidates for chair and the other officer slots for the August 13 meeting. Reed said they would be white and Black candidates. Reed said the party needs to be rebuilt after four years of division.

Reed supported Worley and opposed the changes in leadership three years ago. He and others in the faction of the party opposing England tried unsuccessfully to block the moves with lawsuits. Republicans hold all statewide offices in Alabama and about three-fourths of the seats in the Legislature. The GOP has held a dominant position since winning control of the Legislature in 2010.
