Republicans and Democrats are focusing their attention on flipping enough seats to give their party control of both the House and Senate for the 2025-26 legislative session.

The legislative balance of power is teetering in Tuesday's election on less than a handful of seats, giving both parties hope of capturing the majority control of both chambers for the 2024-26 session. File/The Patriot-Newsoften has made a point of saying he is the only governor in the nation who has to deal with a divided legislature – with the House being under Democratic control and the Senate in Republican hands.

Along with holding the seats they currently have under their party’s control, Democrats need to flip at least three seats into win control of that chamber while Republicans need only to gain at least one seat in the House to reclaim the majority it lost two years ago.All 203 seats in the House are up for election although only 112 feature contested races. In the Senate, only half of the 25 seats are up for grabs and only 17 of those feature contested races.

“We feel great. We feel like we have fended off millions of Yass bucks and are in a good spot to take the majority for the first time in a long time,” said Senate Democratic Campaign Committee consultant Brittany Crampsie. The Senate GOP also is hoping to flip the 45th District seat in Allegheny County held by retiring Democratic Sen. James Brewster, who only narrowly won re-election in the last election. Democrats, however, point out that their party holds a strong registration advantage over Republicans under the redrawn district lines in this district, which they think gives the edge to two-term House member Nick Pisciottano in his face-off against Republican small business owner Jennifer Dintini.
