Democrats are hoping to turn freshly elected House Speaker Mike Johnson’s very conservative voting record and policy positions into a weapon against Republicans
Pres. Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden host public school students, military kids and more for trick-or-treating at the White House. On his first full day on the job, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, R-La., makes a statement to reporters about the mass shooting in Maine, at the Capitol in Washington, Thursday, Oct. 26, 2023.
Johnson has been questioned about his role in drafting a brief supporting a Texas lawsuit contesting the 2020 election results, supporting abortion bans and opposition to same-sex marriage. Abortion has been a potent issue for Democrats to use against Republicans since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade ahead of the 2022 midterms and remains a hot-button issue as states continue to see fights over whether to expand or restrict abortion access and referendums keep making it to the ballot.
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and Democratic National Committee have named Johnson “MAGA Mike” and called him an extremist for his personal views on abortion and same-sex marriage. The DCCC has sent out multiple press releases about vulnerable Republican incumbents who voted for Johnson seeking to connect them to his personal policy choices.
