NBC News’s “Meet the Press” host Kristen Welker asked him during an interview whether he wants to replace Schumer, whose leadership has reportedly irritated some Democrats.

“Well, I think we are united right now as a caucus,” Murphy replied. “There’s always a lot of focus on Senator Schumer and Jeffries. Those are very hard jobs especially at a historic moment like this –”“Well, no, we are united as a caucus right now. Let me just be clear about that,” he responded. “We are united in ending this war. We are united in reining in the lawlessness of ICE. And we’re going to be united in winning the election this November. So right now we are together as a caucus.”on Friday that some Democratic senators are discussing Schumer’s future. Progressive lawmakers like Murphy have felt angry over Schumer’s preference for centrist candidates in primary elections, as well as his handling of last year’s government shutdown and an earlier funding fight, according to the newspaper. Schumer has defended his election choices and negotiations with Republican colleagues for government funding. He has expressed hope about Democrats’ ability to retake the majority, although the senator has conceded that their fate likely rests in the hands of a coupleSchumer has led Senate Democrats since 2017. Some progressive lawmakers and candidates have publicly questioned his ability to effectively unite the caucus in opposition to President Donald Trump, though.
