“I have tried and I have tried and I have tried,” the Laredo Democrat — one of two South Texas congressmen who the GOP has targeted in November — said on the conservative cable news outlet, stressing that “obviously the border is not secure” as Biden administration officials including Vice President Kamala Harris have repeatedly asserted.
Cassy Garcia, a longtime former staffer for U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz and wife of a border patrol agent, is seen as the most serious GOP challenger Cuellar has faced in years, and the border is a central part of her campaign messaging. Biden administration officials, meanwhile, have said they are working to speed up the asylum process while collaborating with Mexico and Central American nations to stem the flow of migration.
“I’m looking at how we can find balance in securing the border,” he said. “On one side, you had Trump that went too far separating kids from families and trying to build a wall and all that. And then you have a current administration that pretty much is just letting everybody in.”
