NEW YORK - Democratic presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren on Tuesday proposed a “Blue New Deal” to revitalize and protect the world’s oceans, including phasing out all offshore drilling and investing in renewable energy projects like wind turbines.
Warren, a U.S. senator from Massachusetts, is among the top contenders for the Democratic nomination to take on Republican President Donald Trump in the November 2020 election. There are 15 Democrats vying for the party’s nod. Warren, who previously vowed to end all new offshore fossil fuel leases, said she would also direct federal agencies to plan a phase-out of existing offshore drilling, while offering retraining and education for displaced workers.
